Description

Bring your 993 back to “Zero-Mile” perfection. At Emegatronic, we don’t just repair engines; we perform a comprehensive mechanical restoration. The M64 flat-six is an engineering masterpiece, but after decades of heat cycles and mileage, even the finest Porsche engines require expert intervention. Our top-tier rebuild service returns your 993 to factory-plus specifications, ensuring modern reliability without losing the soul of the air-cooled experience.

The Emegatronic Process: Precision Without Compromise

Full Teardown & Forensic Inspection

Every engine is stripped down to the crankshaft. Components are subjected to hot-tank cleaning and vapor blasting to remove decades of carbon and sludge, followed by a meticulous inspection for tolerances, cracks, and wear.

Machining & Internal Upgrades * Crankshaft & Case:

Crankshafts are magnafluxed and polished; cases are checked for alignment and “flowed” to ensure optimal oil pressure and longevity, balanced to within 0.1 grams.

Cylinder Head & Valvetrain (The Breathing)

The 993 heads are prone to guide wear and thermal fatigue. We solve this by modernizing the materials.

  • Valve Guides: Replacement of factory guides with Phosphor Bronze equivalents for superior heat dissipation and reduced friction.
  • Valve Seats: Three-angle performance valve job to optimize flow at low-to-mid lift.
  • Sealing Surface: Heads are precision-milled to ensure a perfect 100% flat mating surface with the cylinders, eliminating the 993’s historic “weeping” issues.
  • Springs & Retainers: New OEM or high-rate Titanium retainers (optional) to prevent valve float near the 6,800 RPM redline.
  • The “Dilavar” Solution: We replace aged head studs with high-strength or performance RS studs to prevent the dreaded snapping and head-leak issues common in this generation.

Premium Component Integration

We use only OEM or superior-grade performance parts:

  • New Internals: New main and rod bearings, timing chains, guide rails, and tensioners.
  • Sealing: A complete gasket and seal overhaul from top to bottom, including upgraded viton seals to ensure a bone-dry garage floor.
  • Performance Options: Custom configurations available, including  Mahle forged pistons, 3.8L 4.0 L conversions, and performance camshaft or GT3 Crankshaft for 4.0 conversions .

Aesthetic Restoration

A world-class engine should look as good as it runs. Our rebuilds Optional:

  • Powder-coated fan and valve covers in OE or custom finishes.
  • Re-plated hardware and chromated fan housings.
  • Vapor-blasted aluminum surfaces for a “fresh-from-Stuttgart” appearance.

Nikasil and Lokasil Cylinder Bore Repair for Porsche 993 Engines

Early 993 engines used Nikasil-coated cylinders; later blocks shifted to Lokasil. Both coatings degrade with age, leading to porosity, scoring, and loss of compression. During teardown, we bore-scope every cylinder to check coating integrity.

  • Nikasil bores: Measured for wear and porosity. Where the coating has failed, we re-nikasil or sleeve the cylinder to restore a true seal.
  • Lokasil bores: Honed to factory tolerance and checked for silicon exposure, a common failure point that causes oil consumption.
  • Compression check: Every cylinder is leak-down tested post-machining to confirm sealing before final assembly.

This step is the difference between a cosmetic rebuild and one that actually restores compression and oil control.

Porsche 993 Air Oil Separator (AOS) and Oil System Rebuild

The M64’s Air Oil Separator (AOS) is a known failure point on 993s, causing smoking on startup, fouled spark plugs, and oil in the intake. We address the full oil circuit, not just the AOS:

  • AOS replacement: New OEM or upgraded AOS unit installed as standard.
  • Oil pump: Inspected for wear, rebuilt or replaced if tolerances are out of spec.
  • Oil cooler & lines: Cooler cores and rubber lines checked for cracking and flow restriction; replaced where needed.
  • Oil pressure verification: Post-build oil pressure tested across the RPM range to confirm the case-flowing work paid off.

Engine Testing and Break-In Before Delivery

  • Leak-down and compression test: Performed cylinder-by-cylinder before the engine is signed off.
  • Cold and hot run-in: Engine is run on a stand to verify oil pressure, timing chain tension, and coolant/oil temps under load.
  • Dyno verification (available on request): Confirms power output and fueling on performance builds, including 3.8L and 4.0L conversions.
  • Break-in guidance: Written break-in procedure provided with every engine to protect new bearings, rings, and cam lobes during the first heat cycles.

Porsche 993 Engine Rebuild Packages: Standard, Performance, Concours

Exact pricing depends on the condition of your engine core (the used block you send in for rebuild), parts selection, and conversion scope.

Porsche 993 Engine Rebuild Warranty Coverage

Every engine rebuild is covered against defects in workmanship and parts for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the date of installation. Coverage applies to internal components installed during the rebuild — crankshaft, case, cylinder heads, valvetrain, bearings, and sealing. It does not cover damage from improper break-in, skipped oil services, coolant/oil neglect, over-revving, or unrelated ancillary systems (wiring, fuel delivery, cooling fan) not serviced as part of the build.

Warranty is conditional on following the provided break-in procedure and completing the first oil service at the specified interval; documentation must be retained. Extended warranty terms available on request for Performance and Concours builds.

Shipping Your Porsche 993 Engine Core to Emegatronic

  • Crating: We provide guidance or arrange freight pickup for your engine core.
  • Inspection first: Every core is inspected before work begins; any additional damage found (cracked case, damaged studs, prior repair issues) is quoted separately before proceeding.
  • Return shipping: Completed engines are created and insured for return freight.
  • Local and international drop-off: Available for customers in Bridgeport, CT, as well as international clients — schedule through the consultation form.

Porsche 993 Model Coverage: Carrera, C4, Turbo, Tiptronic

This service covers the full M64 engine family across 993 variants:

  • Carrera (C2) — rear-wheel drive, 3.6L base engine
  • Carrera 4 (C4) — all-wheel drive variant, same M64 base

  • Manual and Tiptronic — both transmission types supported; no impact on engine rebuild scope

FAQs

How much does a Porsche 993 engine rebuild cost?

Cost varies by build package — Standard, Performance, or Concours — and by the condition of your core engine. We provide a fixed quote after inspection, based on required machining, parts, and any conversion work.

How long does a 993 engine rebuild take?

Most rebuilds take 8 to 12 weeks, covering teardown, machining, assembly, and testing. Custom displacement conversions (3.8L/4.0L) or GT3 crankshaft builds take longer due to additional parts sourcing and machining time.

Do you address the Nikasil/Lokasil cylinder issue?

Every cylinder bore is bore-scoped and checked for coating failure. Nikasil bores are re-coated or sleeved as needed; Lokasil bores are honed to spec and checked for silicon exposure before reassembly.

Is the AOS (Air Oil Separator) replaced during the rebuild?

Yes, a new AOS is installed on every rebuild as standard. We also inspect the oil pump, cooler, and lines, then verify oil pressure across the RPM range before the engine ships.

Do you rebuild Turbo and Tiptronic 993 engines?

All M64-family variants are supported, including Carrera, C4, Turbo, and both manual and Tiptronic transmissions. Send your VIN or engine number during consultation and we’ll confirm the exact rebuild scope.

What warranty comes with the rebuild?

Every rebuild carries a 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on workmanship and installed parts, whichever comes first. Coverage requires following the provided break-in procedure and completing the first scheduled oil service.

Can I send my engine from out of state?

Yes. We provide crating guidance and can arrange freight pickup for cores shipped from outside our local service area.

I brought my 2006 BMW Z4 3.0si in to address a weird noise I couldn’t diagnose myself, and I couldn't be more impressed with the entire experience. Elio executed the work flawlessly: the mystery noise is completely gone, and the new Koni setup has transformed the ride quality completely. My suspension needed to be refreshed, and Elio kept the old parts for me to see and take home with me. What really sets this shop apart is that you are truly paying for top-tier customer service and genuine peace of mind. Elio took the time to walk me through his detailed recommendations and allowed me to choose à la carte exactly what I wanted done, without applying any pressure or trying to upsell me on unnecessary work. Elio even returned the original Bilsteins he had ordered for me when I decided last minute to go with Koni’s. I felt really bad doing that, but Elio assured me it was no problem. He told me numerous times that his primary goal is to complete excellent work and make sure I’m happy as a customer. Customer service A+++ I can be pretty OCD about my car, but Elio listened to every single concern with patience and complete respect. Understanding how much I care about keeping the convertible top in pristine condition, he made sure the car was stored safely inside the garage for the entire duration of its stay. I’m not much of a car guy myself, but I respect the BMW brand and like to keep my vehicles in good condition, especially as this is my dream car and I’ve spent a long time trying to find a great example. I knew Elio was the right guy to work on the car when he had similar sentiment. Too many people beat BMW’s to the ground and let them become sh*t boxes. It is rare to find a mechanic who treats your vehicle with the same level of care and respect that you do while delivering precise, high-quality technical work. Worth every single penny. You are paying for quality work. I will definitely be coming back. Thanks again Elio! -Pierce

I can’t recommend Emegatronic enough. I brought my Porsche in with several major issues, including transmission problems, an oil leak, and cooling system issues. From day one, they were professional, honest, and incredibly communicative. They kept me updated throughout the entire process with videos and explanations, so I always knew exactly what was going on with my car. They also blessed me with a great price for the amount of work they did, which I truly appreciated. Now my Porsche runs flawlessly. The transmission shifts smoothly, the oil leak is completely gone, the cooling issues are fixed, and the car drives beautifully. It honestly feels like a completely different car. Working with Emegatronic was an amazing experience from start to finish. If you want a shop that knows what they’re doing, keeps you informed every step of the way, and genuinely takes care of their customers, I highly recommend them. I’ll definitely be coming back for any future work.

If you are like me you look at reviews for indy specialist mechanics for your foreign/German made cars and not necessarily the front page of google. Definitely not the dealership for service once your warranty is up. That's how I found Elio at Emegatronic and I am very glad I did! Great documentation/videos. Fair pricing for excellent/honest work. Helped with timing chain service on a BMW and other misc work too. Car runs great now. He has an impressive shop and uses all the right tools and fluids for everything.

First time customer, and Emegatronic far exceeded my expectations. Been through the Good, Bad and the Ugly when it comes to servicing German cars. Here...no fluff, no filler, only exact information regarding diagnosis with specific facts on repairs, preventative maintenance, and performance modifications. Taking my vehicle anywhere new is nerve racking, stressful, and worrisome. I am relieved to know that Emegatronic represents master technical and mechanical knowledge and with a specific game plan on my vehicle both short and long term. You cannot place a value on this kind of service*****

Another happy Emegatronic customer here! When my BMW M3 became hydrolocked I didn't know what to do. Most local shops told me they couldn't do anything for me. I searched all over and found Elio. I'm very particular about my cars and pretty knowledgeable myself, but trust is something that is hard to come by these days. After speaking with him a few times over the phone he gave me the confidence that he was the right man to rebuild my engine. He sent pictures and videos, kept me updated through the whole process, and answered all my questions on the phone, which meant a lot because I live over a 1,000 miles away. He welcomed me into his shop when I was in the area for work and it was clean, organized and busy! Received my engine carefully packed in a wood crate and it looks brand new. Drives like new too....I couldn't be any happier! Elio is the real deal - obviously very knowledgeable (very familiar with the S65) in his craft, but also trustworthy and just a great guy. He's not just out to make a quick buck, but establish and build relationships.

I called in desperate need of getting my Infiniti q50 tuned. Not only was the car running poorly after adding catless downpipes, but I was in crunch time as i’m going back to college. Elio was awesome with getting me in and out. Drove in there all stressed about a car that wasn’t running right days before I take it to school and I left with an uncontrollable smile. Elio is awesome at what he does and a great guy. Super thankful I found this place.
