Description

The Emegatronic Porsche IMS Single-Row Bearing is a German-manufactured replacement for the factory Porsche Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bearing, engineered for the M96 flat-six engine found in the 996.2 Carrera (2002–early 2005), 986 Boxster (2002–2004), and very early 987/997 models. It uses a reinforced brass cage design, is rated to 22,000 RPM and 6,500 lbs load capacity, and ships with an installation tool and ARP nut. Backed by a lifetime warranty.

Why Does the Porsche IMS Bearing Fail?

Every Porsche M96 and M97 engine relies on an intermediate shaft to indirectly drive the camshafts off the crankshaft — a design inherited from Porsche’s air-cooled flat-six architecture. The IMS bearing supports that shaft at the flywheel end of the engine.

When this bearing is starved of lubrication or reaches the end of its service life, it can develop spalling (fatigue pitting) or fracture outright. Once the bearing fails, the timing chain loses tension control, camshaft timing shifts, and in worst-case scenarios valve-to-piston contact occurs — resulting in catastrophic engine failure that requires a full teardown or engine replacement.

This is why IMS bearing failure is one of the most searched and most feared reliability issues among Porsche 986, 996, and early 987/997 owners, and why proactive replacement with a higher-spec single-row bearing is considered standard preventative maintenance in the Porsche independent-repair community.

What Are the Warning Signs of a Failing IMS Bearing?

  • Metallic debris or shavings found in the oil filter during an oil change
  • An oil leak at the rear of the engine, near the transmission bell housing
  • Knocking, rattling, or metallic noise from the rear of the motor

If you notice any of these symptoms, stop driving the vehicle and have it inspected before further damage occurs. Continued driving on a failing IMS bearing can turn a bearing replacement into a full engine rebuild.

Which Porsche Models Fit This IMS Bearing?

Chassis / Model Engine Model Years Notes
911 Carrera (996.2) 3.6L M96 2002 – early 2005 Direct fit, single-row bearing generation
Boxster (986) 2.7L / 3.2L S 2002 – 2004 Direct fit
Early 987 / 997 M97 Very early 2005 units only Confirm via engine serial number

“Crossover Years” (2000–2001): These model years fall in a transitional production window where Porsche fitted both dual-row and single-row IMS bearings depending on the build date. Before ordering, confirm your engine’s bearing type by checking the Engine Serial Number, stamped on the bottom of the engine sump. Not sure how to read it? Our team can walk you through it — see the FAQ below.

Porsche IMS Bearing FAQs

Is this a single-row or dual-row IMS bearing?

This is a single-row bearing, used specifically on later M96/M97 engines (996.2, 986, and very early 987/997). If your car is a 2000–2001 “crossover year” model, confirm your original bearing type via the engine serial number before ordering — earlier engines used a dual-row design that requires a different part.

Does this replace the OEM IMS bearing, or is it a permanent solution like LN Engineering’s IMSsolution?

This single-row bearing is a direct OEM-fitment replacement upgrade — it uses the original factory flange and is a like-for-like preventative-maintenance replacement. It is not a plain-bearing conversion (such as an oil-fed solution); it still follows standard bearing service intervals.

How do I know if my IMS bearing is failing?

Common warning signs include metallic debris in the oil filter, an oil leak at the rear of the engine, or knocking/metallic noise near the transmission. If you notice any of these, avoid driving the car until it’s inspected.

Is professional installation required?

Yes. IMS bearing replacement requires removing the transmission and clutch/flywheel assembly to access the bearing. We recommend installation by a technician experienced with Porsche M96/M97 engines. An installation tool is included to simplify the process for qualified installers.

What’s included in the box?

The bearing, a dedicated installation tool, and an ARP retaining nut for secure fastening.

What warranty does this bearing carry?

A lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, backed by our in-house Porsche specialist team.

I brought my 2006 BMW Z4 3.0si in to address a weird noise I couldn’t diagnose myself, and I couldn't be more impressed with the entire experience. Elio executed the work flawlessly: the mystery noise is completely gone, and the new Koni setup has transformed the ride quality completely. My suspension needed to be refreshed, and Elio kept the old parts for me to see and take home with me. What really sets this shop apart is that you are truly paying for top-tier customer service and genuine peace of mind. Elio took the time to walk me through his detailed recommendations and allowed me to choose à la carte exactly what I wanted done, without applying any pressure or trying to upsell me on unnecessary work. Elio even returned the original Bilsteins he had ordered for me when I decided last minute to go with Koni’s. I felt really bad doing that, but Elio assured me it was no problem. He told me numerous times that his primary goal is to complete excellent work and make sure I’m happy as a customer. Customer service A+++ I can be pretty OCD about my car, but Elio listened to every single concern with patience and complete respect. Understanding how much I care about keeping the convertible top in pristine condition, he made sure the car was stored safely inside the garage for the entire duration of its stay. I’m not much of a car guy myself, but I respect the BMW brand and like to keep my vehicles in good condition, especially as this is my dream car and I’ve spent a long time trying to find a great example. I knew Elio was the right guy to work on the car when he had similar sentiment. Too many people beat BMW’s to the ground and let them become sh*t boxes. It is rare to find a mechanic who treats your vehicle with the same level of care and respect that you do while delivering precise, high-quality technical work. Worth every single penny. You are paying for quality work. I will definitely be coming back. Thanks again Elio! -Pierce

I can’t recommend Emegatronic enough. I brought my Porsche in with several major issues, including transmission problems, an oil leak, and cooling system issues. From day one, they were professional, honest, and incredibly communicative. They kept me updated throughout the entire process with videos and explanations, so I always knew exactly what was going on with my car. They also blessed me with a great price for the amount of work they did, which I truly appreciated. Now my Porsche runs flawlessly. The transmission shifts smoothly, the oil leak is completely gone, the cooling issues are fixed, and the car drives beautifully. It honestly feels like a completely different car. Working with Emegatronic was an amazing experience from start to finish. If you want a shop that knows what they’re doing, keeps you informed every step of the way, and genuinely takes care of their customers, I highly recommend them. I’ll definitely be coming back for any future work.

If you are like me you look at reviews for indy specialist mechanics for your foreign/German made cars and not necessarily the front page of google. Definitely not the dealership for service once your warranty is up. That's how I found Elio at Emegatronic and I am very glad I did! Great documentation/videos. Fair pricing for excellent/honest work. Helped with timing chain service on a BMW and other misc work too. Car runs great now. He has an impressive shop and uses all the right tools and fluids for everything.

First time customer, and Emegatronic far exceeded my expectations. Been through the Good, Bad and the Ugly when it comes to servicing German cars. Here...no fluff, no filler, only exact information regarding diagnosis with specific facts on repairs, preventative maintenance, and performance modifications. Taking my vehicle anywhere new is nerve racking, stressful, and worrisome. I am relieved to know that Emegatronic represents master technical and mechanical knowledge and with a specific game plan on my vehicle both short and long term. You cannot place a value on this kind of service*****

Another happy Emegatronic customer here! When my BMW M3 became hydrolocked I didn't know what to do. Most local shops told me they couldn't do anything for me. I searched all over and found Elio. I'm very particular about my cars and pretty knowledgeable myself, but trust is something that is hard to come by these days. After speaking with him a few times over the phone he gave me the confidence that he was the right man to rebuild my engine. He sent pictures and videos, kept me updated through the whole process, and answered all my questions on the phone, which meant a lot because I live over a 1,000 miles away. He welcomed me into his shop when I was in the area for work and it was clean, organized and busy! Received my engine carefully packed in a wood crate and it looks brand new. Drives like new too....I couldn't be any happier! Elio is the real deal - obviously very knowledgeable (very familiar with the S65) in his craft, but also trustworthy and just a great guy. He's not just out to make a quick buck, but establish and build relationships.

I called in desperate need of getting my Infiniti q50 tuned. Not only was the car running poorly after adding catless downpipes, but I was in crunch time as i’m going back to college. Elio was awesome with getting me in and out. Drove in there all stressed about a car that wasn’t running right days before I take it to school and I left with an uncontrollable smile. Elio is awesome at what he does and a great guy. Super thankful I found this place.
